Ideate

Shape the story by moving cards.

Story opens on a plain Story page for free writing. The Beat Board next to it holds acts, sequences, beats and scene cards that you drag until the story works.

A wall of index cards that never falls down

Acts are columns, sequences group the scenes, and each card is a short reminder of what happens. Drag a card and an insertion line shows where it will land.

  • Multi-select to move several cards at once
  • A Parking Lot for scenes you are not sure about
  • Twelve card details to show or hide, with Minimal, Story and Production presets
  • An outline view of the same story

From cards to screenplay scenes

Build Screenplay turns the cards you choose into screenplay scenes. You see a preview first, and your cards stay as they were.

  • Cards without a scene heading are pointed out before anything is created
  • Apply a new board order to the screenplay when you are ready

Characters and how they connect

Keep a directory of characters with their details and relationships, and see them on a relationship map. A timeline lays the screenplay scenes out by story day.

  • Warnings before you delete a character used in scenes
  • Archive characters you no longer need

Complete list

Everything in Story and Beat Board.

Each one with what it does, what it is for, and where it is available.

Story page

A plain page for free writing about the story.

What it does
The Story page is a blank page for a treatment, a premise or any thoughts about the story. It saves as you write and is not linked to anything else.
What it is for
To think in sentences before you think in scenes.
WindowsMac

Story page formatting

Bold, italic, underline, highlight and zoom.

What it does
Set font size, bold, italic, underline and highlight colours, switch to a dark page and zoom the page in or out.
What it is for
To mark up your own story notes the way you like to read them.
WindowsMac

Export the Story page

Save the Story page as text, PDF or Word.

What it does
Export the Story page as a plain text file, a PDF or a Word document. Exporting makes a copy and does not change the project.
What it is for
To share a treatment or print it for a meeting.
WindowsMac

Scene cards

A short card for each scene.

What it does
A scene card holds a scene heading, a short and a long description, notes and a colour, and opens in a side drawer. Cards show no scene numbers, because numbers come from the screenplay.
What it is for
To plan scenes before they are written.
WindowsMac

Beats

Smaller story moments between scenes.

What it does
A beat is a one-line story moment. Add beats under an act or sequence, and convert a beat into a scene card when it grows into a scene.
What it is for
To note what happens without committing to a full scene.
WindowsMac

Acts and sequences

Give the story its structure.

What it does
Add, rename, collapse, reorder and delete acts and sequences, and attach a note to an act. Collapse what you are not working on.
What it is for
To organise a long story into parts you can handle one at a time.
WindowsMac

Drag and move cards

Rearrange by dragging.

What it does
Drag a card, beat or sequence and an insertion line shows where it will land. You can also choose a destination from a Move dialog.
What it is for
To try a different order of the story in seconds.
WindowsMac

Card display presets

Choose what each card shows.

What it does
Switch card details on or off and pick a preset such as Minimal, Story or Production, or build your own.
What it is for
To keep the board light while planning and detailed when preparing production.
WindowsMac

Outline view

The same story as a list.

What it does
Switch from the board to an outline that lists acts, sequences and cards in order, with the same menus and drawer.
What it is for
To read the story top to bottom like a document.
WindowsMac

Build Screenplay

Turn cards into screenplay scenes.

What it does
Choose cards and Build Screenplay shows a preview of the scenes it will create. It points out cards that have no scene heading, and your cards stay as they were.
What it is for
To start writing from the structure you have already planned.
WindowsMac

Careful deleting

Deleting an act or sequence asks what to do with its cards.

What it does
Deleting an act or sequence that holds cards asks you to move them or delete them too, and a notice offers Undo afterwards.
What it is for
To make sure structure changes never lose scenes by accident.
WindowsMac

Export the Beat Board

Save the board as PDF, text or CSV.

What it does
Export the whole board or only selected acts as a PDF, a text outline or a CSV file.
What it is for
To print the board for a wall or share the structure with a collaborator.
WindowsMac

Characters

A directory of the people in your story.

What it does
Each character has a name, a role such as Lead, Supporting or Minor, a short description, an image and notes. The list shows how many scenes each character appears in.
What it is for
To keep your cast of characters in one place that the script and production both use.
WindowsMac

Relationships

Record how characters are connected.

What it does
Add a relationship between two characters with a label such as Granddaughter or Old friend, and remove it when the story changes.
What it is for
To remember who is related to whom while you write.
WindowsMac

Archive or delete a character

Remove a character safely.

What it does
Archive characters you no longer need and show them again when you want. Deleting a character that is used in scenes warns you first.
What it is for
To tidy the cast without breaking the script.

Story days and time notes

Say which day a scene happens on.

What it does
Select scenes, assign them to a story day, and add a short time-of-day note for each scene.
What it is for
To keep continuity of days and times across the script.
WindowsMac
Mac screen: Assign Story Day

Good to know

  • The Story page exports as TXT, PDF or Word. The Beat Board exports as PDF, TXT or CSV.
  • A Beat Board can be shared for review as a package file. There is no live shared editing.
  • OpenFrame AI never reads or changes the Story page.

Ideas arrive from the Idea Vault. Built scenes go to the Screenplay, where the writing happens. Scene numbers always come from the screenplay, not the board.
