Read a filled Beat Board

Understand what the acts, sequences, cards, beats and Parking Lot on a working board mean.

Beginner4 stepsMac

Before you start

  • The Beat Board has some cards.

Steps

  1. Look at the board from left to right.

Each act is a column with its title, a scene count (for example 4 scenes) and an Options menu. A sequence sits inside the act with a drag handle, an arrow to collapse it and a count. Scene cards have a solid outline. Beats have a dashed outline. The last column, Parking Lot, holds cards you have set aside, with its own count.

  2. Click a scene card once.

A single click selects the card and draws an orange outline around it. Nothing else changes.

  3. Look at a card that has a heading and a colour.

A coloured stripe along the left edge of a card shows its colour. A small H under the card text marks a card that has a scene heading. The default card display keeps cards small like this. Card Display Settings, in the More menu, changes what cards show.

  4. Look at a board with a single act holding one card.

The picture shows Act 1 holding one scene card, Kiran waits at the stop, with an empty Parking Lot beside it that says: Drag cards and beats here to keep them out of the story without deleting them.

What you get

You can tell scenes, beats, sequences, acts and parked cards apart at a glance.

Watch out for

  • Act titles are shortened on the board when they are long. Open the act's Options menu and choose Rename to see or change the full title.
