Story

Add a beat, or bring in an idea

Jot down a story moment that is not yet a scene, or pull an idea from your Idea Vault onto the board.

Beginner3 stepsMac

Before you start

  • The Beat Board has at least one act.

Steps

  1. Click Add and choose Beat. You can also click Beat at the foot of an act or sequence.

A beat is a small note about something that happens, without being a full scene yet. Beats are drawn with a dashed outline so you can tell them from scene cards.

  2. Type the beat in the Beat text box, for example Meera decides to walk, and press Return.

The beat is added as a dashed card. You can add more detail later by opening it. Beats are not counted in an act's scene total.

  3. To bring in an idea, click Add and choose From Idea Vault….

This lets you pick material you saved in the Idea Vault, so a loose idea can become a card without retyping it. The Idea Vault tutorials explains how ideas are saved.

What you get

A beat is on the board, ready to be moved, opened or converted into a scene.

Watch out for

  • A beat is not a scene. Use Convert to Scene when you want it to become a scene card.
