Add an act, a sequence and a scene card

Build the first branch of the story: an act, a sequence inside it and a scene card inside that.

Beginner6 stepsMac

Before you start

  • The Beat Board is open. It can be empty.

Steps

  1. Click Add Act in the middle of the empty board. You can also choose Act from the Add menu.

Acts are the big parts of the story. Naming happens right on the board, not in a separate window.

  2. Type a name in the Act title box, for example Act One: The last bus, and press Return.

A hint under the box reads: Press Return to add the Act. You can add a note later.

  3. Look at the new act. Click Sequence at the foot of the act, or use Add Sequence.

The act shows 0 items and the prompt Add a sequence or scene. A sequence groups scenes inside an act. The links at the foot of the act add a Scene, a Sequence or a Beat.

  4. Type a name in the Sequence name box, for example Missing the bus, and press Return.

The sequence is added inside the act.

  5. Click Add scene inside the empty sequence.

The sequence shows 0 scenes and the prompt Drop scenes here. The Add scene link adds a scene card to this sequence.

  6. Type a short description in the new scene card, for example Meera misses the last bus, and press Return.

A scene card is a short reminder of what happens in a scene. The sequence now counts 1 scene. You can fill in the rest of the card later in the inspector.

What you get

The board has an act, a sequence inside it and a scene card inside the sequence.

Watch out for

  • Add the card where you want it. If you put it in the wrong place, drag it, or use Move… from its menu.
  • Cards you are unsure about can go to the Parking Lot instead of the story.
