Story and Beat Board

Add sequences, scene cards and beats

Fill an act with the pieces of your story.

Beginner6 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • The Beat Board has at least one act.

Steps

  1. Click Add and choose Scene Card (Ctrl+N), Beat or Sequence.

A new scene card or beat appears with a box open for its text. Scene cards say What happens in this scene? and beats say Beat text. Press Enter to keep it, Shift+Enter for a new line, Esc to cancel. A new item goes where you have selected, or at the end of the last act.

  2. Or click the options button at the right of an act's name and choose Add Sequence, Add Scene or Add Beat.

The act menu also has Rename, Edit note…, Move Left, Move Right and Delete. A plain act holds loose cards and beats as well as sequences. The Scene, Sequence and Beat buttons at the bottom of an act do the same.

  3. Inside a sequence, click Add scene.

A sequence groups scene cards, and shows how many it holds. Click its small arrow to collapse it. Type a sequence name in the box that opens, for example Hero Introduction.

  4. To rename an act, choose Rename in its menu, or double-click its name. Type the new name and press Enter.

The act name turns into a box labelled Act title while you edit it.

  5. Choose Edit note… in the act menu, type in the Note box and click Save Note.

An act note is a private reminder about the act. The dialog is titled Note for the act's name. Hold the pointer over an act's name to read its note. Cancel closes without saving.

  6. Click the arrow at the left of an act's name to collapse it.

The act folds up and the arrow now reads Expand. Collapsing only changes what you see.

What you get

Acts hold sequences, scene cards and beats in the order you want.

Watch out for

  • Add Sequence is greyed out while the board has no act.
