Story and Beat Board

Arrange and view the board

Move cards and acts, change the layout and zoom, and filter what you see.

Beginner7 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • The Beat Board has several cards.

Steps

  1. Drag a card, beat or sequence to a new place.

A line shows where it will land. Acts can be dragged too, by their handle. Dragging only changes the order on the board. Nothing in your screenplay changes.

  2. Or right-click an item and choose Move….

The Move to… dialog has a Destination list of each act, each sequence inside it, and the Parking Lot. A line says Items are added at the end and keep their order. Click Move.

  3. Click Horizontal in the toolbar.

Acts now stack as rows. The act menu then says Move Up and Move Down instead of Move Left and Move Right. Vertical puts them back as columns. OpenFrame remembers the layout.

  4. Click the minus zoom button.

The percentage between the buttons shows the zoom. Zoom out lets you see the whole film at once. The steps are 50%, 70%, 85%, 100%, 125% and 150%.

  5. Click the plus zoom button.

At 150% the cards are bigger and easier to read.

  6. Type a word in Search / filter cards, for example bus.

Only cards whose text matches stay on the board. Acts and sequences remain so you still see where each card sits. Click Clear filter to show everything again.

  7. Click Parking Lot to hide its panel.

The Parking Lot button is pressed while its panel shows and unpressed when it is hidden. Click it again to bring the panel back.

What you get

The board shows the story in the order, size and layout you want.

Watch out for

  • Zoom, layout and the filter change only your view. The story is untouched.
  • Alt with the up and down arrow keys also moves a selected item.
