Story and Beat Board

Find your way around Story

Know what each of the five Story tabs is for.

Beginner5 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • A project is open.

Steps

  1. Click Story in the left rail.

Story opens on the Story tab. The page says Write your story freely. This page is not linked to anything else. The five tabs are under the top bar: Story, Board, Outline, Characters and Timeline.

  2. Click Board.

The Beat Board shows your acts as columns, with the Parking Lot at the right. Everything on it is a card or a beat that you can drag.

  3. Click Outline.

The same board as an indented list: acts, then sequences, scenes and beats. It is good for reading the whole story in order. The toolbar is the same, without the zoom and layout buttons.

  4. Click Characters.

A directory of your characters. Each shows how many screenplay scenes they appear in. A line says its most useful feature is the list of scenes each character appears in.

  5. Click Timeline.

The scenes of your screenplay, with an optional story day and a time note for each. The page says Optional. Useful only when time continuity matters.

What you get

You know which tab to use for each job.

Watch out for

  • If a link from search or from the Screenplay takes you to a card, Story opens on the Board tab instead of the Story tab.
