Storyboards

Start a storyboard when the project has no scenes

Make a standalone storyboard in a project that has no screenplay scenes yet.

Beginner3 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • A project is open that has no storyboards and no screenplay scenes.

Steps

  1. In Production, click the Storyboards tab, then click New Storyboard.

The page says No storyboards yet. It explains that storyboards usually belong to a screenplay scene, so the heading comes from the script, and that you can also start a standalone storyboard now. The screenplay never needs shot directions.

  2. In the New Storyboard dialog, type a Name *, for example Title sequence, and click Create Storyboard.

With no scene chosen, Name * is required. If it is empty you see Give the storyboard a name, or choose a scene. The Scene list only appears when your project has scenes, and it starts on No scene (standalone storyboard) when the dialog is opened from a board that is not tied to a scene.

  3. Look at the new storyboard.

The picker shows the new storyboard, the tag says 0 panels, and the page says Create panels for this scene. A panel needs only a visual area and a short description. It offers Import Image, Draw / Sketch and Empty Panel.

What you get

A standalone storyboard is open with no panels, ready for you to add some.

Watch out for

  • A standalone storyboard has no scene heading and no shot numbers. Link it to a scene later from the Storyboard actions menu.
