Screenplay

Start a new draft

Copy the script into a new draft so you can rewrite without touching the old one.

Beginner6 stepsMac

Before you start

  • A screenplay with text is open.

Steps

  1. Click the Draft menu at the right of the bar.

The menu lists your drafts, with a mark on the current one, then New Draft…, Manage Drafts… and Renumber Scenes.

  2. Choose New Draft…. Type a Draft name and an optional Note.

The sheet says: The source draft stays exactly as it is. The new draft becomes a separate version. Cancel closes it, Create Draft makes the draft.

  3. Type a clear name, for example Rewrite A, and click Create Draft.

A clear name makes Compare and the Drafts list easier to read.

  4. Look at the bar after the draft is made.

A notice reads Created draft “Rewrite A”, and the Draft menu now shows Rewrite A. You are working in the new draft.

  5. Rewrite a few lines.

The changes go into Rewrite A only. The earlier draft stays as it was.

  6. Open the Draft menu again to switch drafts.

Both drafts are listed, here Example-Short (imported) and Rewrite A. Choose one to open it.

What you get

A second draft exists and you are rewriting in it.

Watch out for

  • Check the Draft menu shows the new name before you type, so you do not edit the original by accident.
  • A new draft starts as a copy of the script you were in.
