Story and Beat Board

Add and edit a character

Create a character and fill in the role, description and notes.

Beginner7 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • A project is open.

Steps

  1. Click Characters.

With no characters the page says No characters yet. and Create your first character. Name is all you need. Role, image and notes are optional.

  2. Click Add Character.

The New Character dialog has Name *, Role / title, Image with Choose image…, and Short description. Create Character stays unavailable until you type a name. Choose image… opens the Windows file window.

  3. If the name matches an existing character, read the warning.

It says Possible match: a character named LAKSHMI (and the description) already exists. Click Use Existing to go to that character, or Create Another Character Anyway to make a second one.

  4. Click a character in the list.

Each row shows initials, the name, the role and a chip with how many screenplay scenes the character is in. The detail on the right shows the name, the role and description, SCENES THIS CHARACTER APPEARS IN, RELATIONSHIPS, LINKED SCENE CARDS (REFERENCE ONLY) and Notes. The Sc chips open that scene in the Screenplay. Scenes appear when the current draft has dialogue cues with the character's name.

  5. Click another character to see theirs.

Each character has their own scenes, relationships and notes. Type in Notes to keep private thoughts about the character.

  6. Click Edit, change Name *, Role / title or Short description, and click Save.

The dialog is titled Edit and the character's name. Renaming does not change screenplay text. Use Find and Replace in the screenplay for that.

  7. To link a scene card, choose it in Link a Scene Card… and click Link.

The link is for reference only. Scene Cards never need characters.

What you get

The character is in the directory with the details you gave.

Watch out for

  • The scene count comes from your screenplay's dialogue, so a new character shows no scenes until they speak in one.
