Story and Beat Board

Archive or delete a character

Remove a character from the list safely, keeping the screenplay intact.

Intermediate5 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • The project has a character.

Steps

  1. Click the ... button at the top right of the character's panel.

The menu has Add image…, Remove image, Archive (or Unarchive) and Delete…. Remove image is greyed out when there is no image.

  2. Click Delete… on a character who is in the screenplay.

The dialog says the character is in use, for example LAKSHMI appears in 44 screenplay scenes and Cast & Crew. Archiving removes the character from this list without breaking those links. Screenplay text is never changed. If you delete, the character goes to Recently Deleted and can be restored. The buttons are Cancel, Delete Anyway and Archive Instead.

  3. The same dialog for a character with fewer uses.

Here PADMA appears in 12 screenplay scenes, so the dialog does not mention Cast & Crew. Archive Instead is the safe choice.

  4. Click Archive Instead.

The character leaves the list and a message says Archived PADMA with Undo.

  5. Tick Show archived characters at the bottom of the list.

Archived characters come back to the list marked Archived. Open one and choose Unarchive in its menu to restore it.

What you get

The character is archived, with every link to the screenplay kept.

Watch out for

  • A character who is not used anywhere gets a short Delete dialog instead: the character moves to Recently Deleted and you can restore it or use Undo.
