Breakdown

Tag words in the script

Select words in a scene and mark them as an element of a category.

Beginner5 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • A scene is open and the breakdown panel is showing.

Steps

  1. Drag across the words you want to tag, all within one line of the script.

For example, drag across a long corridor. The selection must stay inside a single line, because a selection across lines is not offered for tagging. A Tag Selection button also appears in the panel while words are selected, for people who do not use a pop up menu.

  2. In the small menu that opens under your selection, choose a category, for example Props.

The menu is titled Tag and your words in quotation marks, then as…. It lists all eleven categories, each with its colour dot, icon and name: Cast, Extras / Background, Location / Set, Props, Wardrobe, Vehicles, Hair / Makeup, Special Effects, VFX, Sound and Animals. Press Esc, or click elsewhere, to close it without tagging.

  3. In the dialog Tag, check the Category * and Name *, add a note if you like, and click Add to Scene.

The dialog asks: What does Scene 5 need? Pick an existing catalog item or create a new one. Category * is already set from the menu. Name * holds your words in title case, which you can change. When no catalog item looks like it, the choice Create new item is selected, noted Added to the production catalog. Notes (optional) is for this scene only. A line at the bottom says: The screenplay text is not changed; the tag marks the selected words in this scene. The button is greyed out until Name * has text.

  4. If the name matches a catalog item, keep Use existing selected.

Type or edit the name and OpenFrame lists matching items. In the picture the name Soldering iron finds Use existing: Soldering iron, marked Prop, Required and used in scene 1, with a Same item chip. It is selected for you. Create new item stays under it if you really want a second item.

  5. Look at the scene after you click Add to Scene.

Your words are underlined in the category colour. The panel shows the category block with a count, and the element with its catalog status, for example Required. The scene row shows a category mark. A message says Added the name to Scene 5, with an Undo link.

What you get

The words are tagged, the element is in the scene's breakdown and it is linked to the catalog.

Watch out for

  • Tagging never changes the screenplay. It only marks the words in this scene.
  • If nothing happens when you select words, make sure the selection stays on one line and that the panel is not hidden.
