Relink a linked file that cannot be found

Repair a linked file whose original was moved, renamed or sits on a drive that is not connected.

Intermediate4 stepsMac

Before you start

  • The project has a linked file that is marked Unavailable.

Steps

  1. Find the row with the red label Unavailable.

In place of Open, the row has a Relink button. The original is not where OpenFrame expects it.

  2. Click More actions. The menu now starts with Relink….

The rest of the menu is as usual: Details, Rename, Move to, Reveal in Finder, Export Copy… and Delete.

  3. Open Details to read the explanation.

The panel says: This linked file can't be found. It may be on a drive that isn't connected, or it was moved. Relink it. The reference is never deleted. Click Relink… and pick the file in its new place.

  4. Compare with a linked file that is available.

An available linked file says: Linked files stay where they are. Moving or renaming the original breaks the link until you relink it. Its buttons are Reveal in Finder, Export Copy…, Relink… and Delete.

What you get

The link points at the file again, and the row shows Open.

Watch out for

  • If the file is on an external drive, connect the drive first. Relink only when the file really was moved.
