Files

Link to a file that stays where it is

Refer to a large or shared file without copying it into the project.

Intermediate2 stepsMac

Before you start

  • A project is open and you have a file on your Mac or on a drive.

Steps

  1. Click the arrow beside Add File and choose Link to file….

Pick the file in the window that opens. The file stays in its own place.

  2. Find the new row in the list.

A linked file shows the blue label Linked (external). In the picture, Lamp rig quote.txt is linked, while Depot permit letter.txt, Bus depot at night.png and Night shoot permit.pdf are stored in the project.

What you get

The project holds a reference to the file, and the file stays where it was.

Watch out for

  • Moving, renaming or deleting the original breaks the link until you relink it. See Relink a linked file that cannot be found.
  • A linked file is not inside the project folder. Copy it into the project, or make a portable backup, if you need it to travel with the project.
