Idea Vault

Group items with collections, folders and tags

Create a collection and a folder, and put items in them.

Intermediate9 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • The vault has items.

Steps

  1. Click New Collection in the side panel.

The dialog asks for Name *. A hint shows examples such as Ending ideas, Visual References, Crazy scenes, Locations, Research, Music and Things to remember, and says OpenFrame never prescribes names. Create is the button that confirms. Collections are references: an item can be in several collections and stays where it is.

  2. If you click Create with the box empty, read the message.

The box turns red and says Name is required. Type a name to continue.

  3. Look at the new collection in the side panel and click it.

It appears under COLLECTIONS with a count of 0. The page says This collection is empty. Add items to it from their menu or the selection bar.

  4. Click New Folder in the side panel.

The dialog asks for Folder name *. A folder holds an item in one place at a time, like a folder on your disk. Create confirms.

  5. If you click Create with the box empty, read the message.

The box says Folder name is required.

  6. Click the new folder.

It appears under FOLDERS with a count of 0. The page says This folder is empty. Move items here or add new ones while it's open. Anything you add with the Add menu while a folder or collection is open goes into it.

  7. Open an item, click Add to Collection…, pick a collection and click Add.

The dialog says Collections are references. The items stay where they are. Each collection shows how many items it holds. New Collection… lets you make one on the spot. If you have no collection yet, the New Collection box opens straight away.

  8. Open an item, click Move…, pick a folder and click Move.

The dialog says Folders only organise. Nothing is copied or changed. The first choice is No folder (All items). Nested folders are indented. New Folder… makes a folder on the spot.

  9. If you clicked New Folder… in that dialog, type a name and click Create and Move.

The folder is created and the item is moved into it in one step.

What you get

Your items are in the collections and folders you made.

Watch out for

  • A folder holds an item in one place. A collection can include the same item as another collection does. Use a collection when an item belongs in two groups.
