Add a theme by pasting its text

Check a theme you pasted for readability and save it to My Themes.

Advanced8 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • The Appearance tab is open and you have the text of an OpenFrame theme file.

Steps

  1. Under My Themes, click Paste Theme….

Until you add a theme My Themes says: No imported themes yet. Theme files are small .json files, for example from the OpenFrame website.

  2. In the Import theme dialog, click the Theme text box and paste the text.

The dialog says: Paste the text of an OpenFrame theme file. It is checked before anything is saved. Check Theme stays greyed out while the box is empty.

  3. Look at the text and the size note under the box, then click Check Theme.

The picture shows a small theme with a name, a description, an author and a few colour numbers. The note under the box shows the size, for example 0.3 KB of 10 KB.

  4. If the text is larger than 10 KB, the box turns red and says This is larger than 10 KB. Theme files are small; this is not one. Paste the right text.

Check Theme stays greyed out until the text fits.

  5. Read the result. A green note says This theme is readable in Light and Dark.

The dialog shows the theme's name, author and description and a Light and a Dark preview. Open Readability check to see every text colour tested against its background, with the Contrast figure and Pass or Too low. At least 4.5 to 1 is needed.

  6. If a blue note says Small changes were made so text stays readable, read what was changed.

OpenFrame adjusts a colour by a small step when that is enough, for example making the accent colour darker by one point so button text stays readable. The theme is still usable.

  7. If a red note says This theme cannot be used. Nothing was changed, read the list and click Edit the text to fix it, or Cancel.

Each line names the colour pair that is too hard to read, for example Muted text on panels, with its figure and the minimum. Save to My Themes and Save and Apply are greyed out for a rejected theme.

  8. Click Save to My Themes to keep the theme, or Save and Apply to keep it and use it now.

A message says the theme is saved to My Themes, or saved and applied. Edit the text takes you back to the pasted text to change it. Cancel closes the dialog and saves nothing.

What you get

The theme is in My Themes, and in use if you chose Save and Apply.

Watch out for

  • Nothing is saved until you click a Save button.
  • Only paste themes from a source you trust. OpenFrame still checks the format and the readability.
