Screenplay

Find text in the script

Search the whole script or one scene and step through the matches.

Beginner4 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • A screenplay is open.

Steps

  1. Click Find in the toolbar, or press Ctrl+F.

A find box opens at the top right of the page with two boxes, Find and Replace with, and the buttons Replace and Replace All. Whole script is selected, and Match case and Whole word are not ticked. Press Esc, or click the x, to close it.

  2. Type the word you want in the Find box, for example radio.

Every match is highlighted on the page and the box shows where you are, for example 1 of 34. Press Enter or the down arrow for the next match and Shift+Enter or the up arrow for the previous one.

  3. Click This scene to look only in the scene you are in.

The button shows the number of matches in the scene, for example This scene (6). The counter changes to match, for example 4 of 5. Tick Match case to respect capitals, or Whole word to skip words that only contain your text.

  4. If nothing matches, the box says No matches found.

Check the spelling, or clear Match case and Whole word, or switch from This scene to Whole script.

What you get

You land on each match in turn and can edit it where it stands.

Watch out for

  • This Find looks only in the open draft of the open screenplay. To search the whole project, use the search box at the top of the window.
