ScreenplayCompare two drafts
See which scenes and lines changed between two drafts, scene by scene or as text.
Before you start
- The screenplay has at least two drafts. Compare is greyed out otherwise.
Steps
Click Compare in the toolbar. You can also click Compare… in the Drafts drawer, or choose Compare with current from a draft's menu.
The Compare page takes over the window.
Read the page. Choose the Before and After drafts at the top, and click Text-only.
Back to script returns to the editor. Before and After are lists of drafts with an arrow between them. The CHANGES list on the left names each change, for example Changed, 1 line changed in Scene 1, and ends with Same, 34 scenes unchanged. A Summary line counts scenes added, removed, changed, moved and unchanged. The text view shows the two drafts side by side. A line added in the After draft is shaded green and the Before side shows a hatched blank.
Click Next change, or the next entry in CHANGES.
The view moves to the next changed scene, for example Scene 3. Previous goes back.
Click Scene-only.
The view becomes a table with CHANGE, the Before scene, the After scene and MATCHED BY. Each row says Changed or Same and how the scenes were matched, for example Same scene.
If both lists show the same draft, read the message Choose two different drafts to compare.
Pick a different draft in Before or After.
What you get
You know exactly what changed from one draft to the next.
Watch out for
- Compare only looks. It does not change either draft.
