Production Plan: overview and catalog

Choose the production source

Tell production which screenplay draft it is based on, so the breakdown, catalog and schedule can be built from it.

Beginner5 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • A screenplay exists in the project. Write or import one first.

Steps

  1. Open Production, then the Overview tab. Click Start Production Setup at the top right.

With no source the tiles read No source yet and show zeros, and a blue note says: Production starts from a named screenplay draft. Choose it with Start Production Setup. Your screenplay is not changed, and you will not recreate any scene by hand. Clicking the SCRIPT STATUS tile opens the same dialog.

  2. If the dialog says There are no screenplay drafts yet, close it, write or import a screenplay, and come back.

The dialog is titled Handing the script over to production. and asks Which screenplay draft should become the production source? With no drafts it only shows the note, and Set as Production Source stays greyed out. Production is always based on a named draft. Close, or Cancel, leaves without a change.

  3. When drafts exist, click the draft you want in the list.

Each draft is a row with its name, Not locked or the lock date, and its scene count. A locked draft shows a Locked label. If the project has more than one screenplay, the screenplay title is shown beside the draft name. The selected row has an orange outline and a tick. The picture shows the same dialog opened later from Change Production Source, so it also marks Second Draft as Current source.

  4. Read the lines under the list, then click Set as Production Source.

For a first setup the dialog lists what OpenFrame will create or initialise: breakdown scenes, one per screenplay scene and numbered automatically; the production catalog; and the scene list used by shot lists, storyboards and the schedule. A box, Why this draft? (optional), takes a short reason such as Locked shooting draft. The dialog repeats that you will not recreate any scene by hand and your screenplay is not changed.

  5. Look at the Overview again.

A message at the bottom says Production Source set to the draft name and that your screenplay is not changed, with an Undo link. The SCRIPT STATUS tile now shows the draft, the scene count appears in BREAKDOWN PROGRESS, and the button at the top right reads Change Production Source.

What you get

The chosen draft is the Production Source. The breakdown has a scene for every scene in it, and the Overview shows real numbers.

Watch out for

  • Your screenplay is not changed by choosing a source.
  • Set as Production Source is greyed out until a draft is selected. If the list is empty, there is no screenplay draft yet.
  • If your role cannot edit the project, Start Production Setup and Change Production Source do not show.
