FilesLink a file that stays where it is
Refer to a file on a drive or in a folder without copying it into the project.
Before you start
- A project is open. The file is on this computer or on a connected drive.
Steps
Click Add File, then choose Link to file….
A link stores only a reference. Use it for very large files or files another program keeps up to date.
Pick the file in the Windows window that opens.
The file joins the list. The WHERE column shows a Linked (external) label and the folder where the original lives. The row has Open as usual.
What you get
The file is listed as Linked (external) and opens from where it is.
Watch out for
- A linked file stays where it is and does not travel with the project. Only a file stored in the project does.
- If you move or rename the original, or the drive is not connected, the row turns to Unavailable. See Relink a file that has gone missing.
