Breakdown

Choose the draft that production is based on

Set the screenplay draft that Breakdown and the rest of Production will use.

Beginner3 stepsWindows

Before you start

  • A project is open.
  • The project has a screenplay draft, written or imported. Without one, the dialog explains that you must write or import a screenplay first.

Steps

  1. Click Breakdown in the left rail. If the project has no Production Source yet, click Select Source.

The page says Choose a screenplay source to begin the breakdown. Under it: Open a screenplay to begin breaking down scenes. Choose the draft that production should be based on. Select Source opens the choice of draft. Import Screenplay takes you to the Screenplay page to bring in a script, which the Import a screenplay tutorials explains.

  2. Read the dialog Handing the script over to production.

The dialog asks: Which screenplay draft should become the production source? When the project has no draft at all, a blue note says: There are no screenplay drafts yet. Write or import a screenplay first. Production is always based on a named draft. Set as Production Source stays greyed out. Click Cancel, or the X, to leave, then write or import a screenplay.

  3. When the project has drafts, click the draft you want in the dialog, then click Set as Production Source.

Each draft is a card with its name, either Not locked or locked with a date, and the number of scenes. A Locked label marks a locked draft, and a tick marks your choice. Below the cards the dialog lists what OpenFrame will create: the breakdown scenes (one per screenplay scene, numbered automatically), the production catalog and the scene list used by shot lists, storyboards and the schedule. An optional box, Why this draft? (optional), keeps a short reason. This dialog state is not pictured here. After you confirm, a message says Production Source set to the draft name and that your screenplay is not changed, with an Undo link. The picture shows the finished page: the source bar names the draft, the scene list fills the left side and the first scene is open.

What you get

The Production Source bar names your draft and every scene of it is listed on the left, ready to break down.

Watch out for

  • You do not recreate scenes by hand. Breakdown builds its scene list from the draft you choose.
  • Choosing a draft never changes the screenplay.
