Use the Outline

Read and rearrange your story as a list, with the same cards as the board.

Beginner7 stepsMac

Before you start

  • The Beat Board has some cards.

Steps

  1. Click Outline in the bar across the top.

The page is titled Beat Board · Outline. Each act, sequence, scene and beat is a row, labelled Act:, Sequence:, Scene: or Beat:, with a drag handle at its left. A coloured dot and a small H mark a card with a colour and a heading. The Parking Lot is listed at the end with its count, and Add Act is at the foot.

  2. Click a card row to select it.

The row is highlighted. You can drag the handle to move it, or use its menu.

  3. Control-click a card row.

The menu lists Open, Duplicate, Move…, Move Up, Move Down, Move to Previous Act, Move to Next Act, Send to Parking Lot, Convert to Screenplay Scene, Copy as Beat and Delete.

  4. Choose Open to edit the card in the inspector.

The inspector is the same one as on the board, with the heading, short and long descriptions and notes.

  5. Click Options on an act row.

The act menu lists Rename, Edit note…, Move Up, Move Down and Delete.

  6. Click the arrow beside an act to fold it.

A folded act hides its scenes. The arrow's name changes to Expand and then the act's name.

  7. Type a word in Search / filter cards.

The list narrows to the rows that match, for example depot. Clear filter shows everything again. Add, Build Screenplay and More work as they do on the board.

What you get

You can read, filter and reorder the whole story as a list.

Watch out for

  • The Outline and the board show the same cards. Deleting a card in one deletes it in the other.
