Idea Vault

Create a folder and move an item into it

Group items by where they belong without copying or changing them.

Intermediate6 stepsMac

Before you start

  • The vault has at least one item.

Steps

  1. Click New Folder under Folders in the list at the left.

The New folder sheet has one box, Folder name, with Cancel and Create.

  2. If you try to create a folder with the box empty, read the message.

It says Folder name is required. Type a name, for example Night scenes, to clear it.

  3. Click Create, then click the new folder in the list.

The folder shows a count of 0 items. In the picture the list also shows the tags depot and rain.

  4. Open an item and click Move at the top of the inspector. You can also click Move to Folder in the selection bar, or choose Move… from the card menu.

The Move to Folder sheet says Folders only organise. Nothing is copied or changed. A menu shows No folder (All items). Cancel closes it.

  5. Open the menu, choose your folder, then click Move.

The menu also has New Folder… so you can make a folder without leaving the sheet. Choose No folder (All items) to take an item out of a folder.

  6. Click the folder in the list to see what is inside.

The folder now shows 1 item in its count and the item appears when you open it.

What you get

The folder holds the item. The item itself is unchanged.

Watch out for

  • A folder only organises. Moving an item never copies it or changes its text.
