Group scenes by story day on the Timeline

Mark which scenes happen on which day, when time continuity matters.

Intermediate5 stepsMac

Before you start

  • The project has a screenplay with scenes.

Steps

  1. Click Timeline in the bar across the top.

With no screenplay scenes yet the page says Story days belong to screenplay scenes. Build a screenplay from the Beat Board or write one first. It adds that Beat Board cards never need a story day.

  2. Once a screenplay exists, look at the page.

It says Optional. Useful only when time continuity matters, and shows the scene count and the line Scene numbers come from the screenplay order. All scenes start under UNASSIGNED: Scenes you have not given a story day yet. This is fine: story days are optional. Each row has a tick box, the scene number and heading, and a time note box.

  3. Tick the scenes you want in one day.

The button changes to Assign Story Day with the number of scenes you ticked, here (3).

  4. Click Assign Story Day. In the sheet, type a Story Day and click Assign.

The sheet says how many scenes are selected. The hint reads: For example 1, 2, 3, or a label such as Flashback. Clear Story Day removes the day from the selected scenes. Cancel closes the sheet.

  5. Look at the groups, then click a time note box and type, for example 11:40 pm.

Scenes are grouped under headings such as DAY 1 and FLASHBACK, each with its scene count. Unassigned scenes stay at the foot. A message reads Assigned Story Day Flashback, with Undo and Dismiss. The time note is free text for you.

What you get

Scenes are grouped by story day, with optional time notes.

Watch out for

  • Story days are optional. Leave scenes under Unassigned if time order does not matter to your story.
