Production Plan

Add shots to a scene

Plan how to capture a scene by adding the shots you need, each with a short description.

Beginner5 stepsMac

Before you start

  • A screenplay with scenes is the Production Source.

Steps

  1. Choose Shot Lists in the section pop-up.

The page asks: How will I capture this scene? Without a screenplay it says No screenplay scenes yet. Shots are planned scene by scene. Write or import a screenplay first. Scene headings come from the script, so you never type them twice. Open Screenplay takes you there.

  2. With scenes in place, read the page.

A line says Scenes from the current draft. The Scene pop-up starts on All scenes. Shot list view has List and Grid. The page shows 0 shots and says No shots in this scene yet. Add only the shots you need. Camera details are optional.

  3. Open the Scene pop-up and choose one scene.

The menu lists All scenes, the current draft and each scene by number and heading. Pick one scene to add shots to it.

  4. Click Add Shot with the box empty.

The page says Describe the shot to add it. Add Shot works only when the box has a description.

  5. Type a description such as Wide: the bus pulls into the empty stop and click Add Shot. Repeat for each shot.

Shots get letters, 1A, 1B, 1C, from their order. The box says Describe the next shot, for example Wide: Arjun enters the station. A line says shot letters are generated from order, so you never renumber by hand. The header counts the shots, for example 3 shots.

What you get

The scene has a list of shots, lettered automatically.

Watch out for

  • Choose one scene first. Shots belong to a scene, so the box for a new shot is not offered while All scenes is selected.
  • Add only the shots you need. Camera details are optional.
